Physical Education
Our Intent, Implementation and Impact for PE.
Intent:
At Kentisbeare Primary School, we believe each child has the right to an outstanding Physical Education programme, providing the foundations for lifelong participation in physical activity and/or sport. We aim to develop and improve pupils’ attitudes towards both participation and competition through regularly timetabled PE lessons and extra-curricular activities.
Kentisbeare Primary School believes that Physical Education (PE), experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children skills to keep them safe, such as being able to swim. We also want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Kentisbeare, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes:
Fair play – Teamwork – Respect – Determination – Persistence – Resilience – Self Belief
‘The National Curriculum 2014’ has the following aims for all pupils:
To develop competence in a broad range of physical activities;
- Are physically active for sustained periods of time;
- Children engage in competitive sports and activities
- To lead a healthy, active lives.
Alongside this our curriculum drivers aim to:
- Develop Language and Reading
- Encourage Curiosity
- Build Resilience
- Promote Wellbeing
- Improve Knowledge of the world
- Appreciate the Outdoors
It is our intent that these are met through the implementation of engaging and active PE lessons.
Implementation:
To help us deliver on our intent at Kentisbeare, we have purchased a PE scheme from Greenacres Sports Partnership. This new scheme provides all teachers across the school the ability to ensure that the curriculum objectives are achieved.
In EYFs the children are able to complete short lessons with activities focused upon the skills of agility, balance, coordination, jumping, play and target. These activities build upon the children fundamental movement skills which they need to develop before moving into sport.
In KS1 there are 10 activity areas which are covered. These activities include invasion games, striking and fielding, dance, gymnastics and net and wall games.
In KS2, there are 13 sport-based learning areas incorporating striking and fielding, net and wall games, dance, gymnastics and outdoor and adventurous activities. These 13 areas are taught throughout the year groups, allowing for repetition, practise and progression of skills. This long-term approach allows for full coverage of the national curriculum objectives and for these to become embedded in all children before moving on to their next school.
The children in the school take part in two-hours of physical activity a week, with a minimum of one designated PE lesson. Physical activity is also maintained using structured break-time and lunch-time play and Outdoor Learning sessions.
Pupils are encouraged to take part in a range of extra-curricular activities provided by the staff in the school. These clubs lead in to the children taking part in competitive sporting events within the local area.
In order to maintain high standard of PE teaching, Saints Southwest support our class teachers during PE lessons on three afternoons a week. Saints Southwest also then provide extra-curricular activities for children to take part in.
We are in partnership with the Culm Valley Learning Community. Our lead school is Uffculme School who provides a programme of extra-curricular sporting events throughout the year for children of all ages and abilities. These events develop the children’s physical well-being but also focus on attributes such as teamwork and leadership. We also make full use of the East Devon Sports Partnership, run by The King’s School, attending additional events run by them.
Swimming takes place in all year groups at the Mid Devon Leisure Centre in Tiverton. KS2 children have 6 swimming lessons, KS1 children have 5 lessons while Foundation children attend 2 swimming taster sessions.
Year 6 undertake a week-long residential each year to develop their outdoor and adventurous activity skills, while also aiding their independence for secondary school. Meanwhile, Year 3 also attend at 3 day residential to develop their OAA skills and aid them in becoming independent learners for KS2. This is thoroughly enjoyed by the children and always a highlight of the year for them.
The children undertake a yearly sports day which incorporates the traditional running events as well as different field events. The children also participate in a whole school swimming gala to celebrate their swimming ability.
We have also introduced federation sports events for each year group, allowing them to take part in a range of activities with a wider range of children.
Impact:
Children at Kentisbeare enjoy PE. They are motivated to participate and develop a love of sport through high quality teaching that is engaging and fun. Through these lessons the children are able to take responsibility for their own health and fitness. From a young age the children understand the importance of being fit and healthy to help them live happy and healthy lives.
As a school we individually assess the children in their physical education based upon not only their sporting ability but their understanding of health and wellbeing, strategy and cooperation. This allows us to monitor children’s strengths and weaknesses enabling us to focus on these areas as they move through the school. This allows us to see the impact our teaching is having on the children.
We are able to assess the impact of our PE using external measures such as the school games mark. For the year 2022-23, Kentisbeare School was awarded the Silver School Games Mark due to our commitment to the development of physical activity and competition across our school and into our community.
