Our aim for Ash Class is to provide a happy, safe and stimulating environment, which allows all children to feel secure and valued and therefore ready and eager to learn. We provide a supportive and secure environment in which every child can flourish and learn at their own pace and in their own individual way. We believe the relationships which the children develop in the Early Years, with each other and with our team, are central to their happiness and will lay the best possible foundation for them to become independent lifelong learners.

Our year in Ash Class
Phonics in Ash Class
In Reception, phonics is a core part of our daily curriculum, laying the essential foundations for your child’s journey into reading and writing. Using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme, children learn the relationship between sounds (phonemes) and the letters that represent them (graphemes).
Our programme is designed to build confidence from the very first day. We introduce sounds in a specific, systematic order, starting with single letters and moving on to "special friends" (digraphs like sh, ch, and th). By the end of Reception, children will be able to blend sounds to read words and sentences with increasing fluency.
📚 Our "Two Book" Approach
To support your child at home, they will bring home two different types of books. This is a key part of the Little Wandle method to ensure children feel successful.
| Book Type | Purpose | Your Role |
| A Book to Learn | To build fluency. This book is matched 100% to the sounds your child already knows. | Celebrate! They should be able to read 95% of this book alone. If it seems "easy," that’s perfect—it means they are building speed and confidence. |
| A Book to Love | To build vocabulary and a love of stories. This book is for you to read to them. | Snuggle up and enjoy it together. Talk about the pictures, use funny voices, and enjoy the story without expecting them to read it. |
How You Can Help at Home
Consistency is key to the Little Wandle method. You can support your child by using "pure sounds" (avoiding the 'uh' sound at the end of letters) and using the same catchy mnemonics we use in class.
Please see our main phonics page for more information surrounding early reading and phonics in the Early Years.
